Kelsey & Conscious Discipline!

In September I was awarded a scholarship to attend a birth-5 conscious discipline institute. I spent a week in Orlando learning all about Conscious Discipline and how it can improve the lives of not only children but adults.

So, what is Conscious Discipline? Conscious Discipline is a trauma-informed, social-emotional learning (SEL) approach that focuses on building safety, connection, and problem-solving skills in both children and adults.

As founder, Becky Bailey says “conscious discipline is not something you do to a child, rather something you instill within them.”

At its core, Conscious Discipline promotes the idea that discipline should teach and guide, rather than punish. It encourages adults (teachers, parents, etc.) to model emotional regulation and create a safe, supportive environment where children can learn to manage their emotions, resolve conflicts, and develop positive relationships with others.

Key components of Conscious Discipline include safety, connection, problem-solving, self-regulation and the 7 powers which guide individuals in taking responsibility for their actions and reactions.

I was first introduced to Conscious Discipline at the VAHSA conference in Oct 2023. Anyone who was on the training or around me after can attest that learning about Conscious Discipline re-igniting a fire in me and I fell in love with using it to help children grow and thrive. I LOVE and believe in Conscious Discipline wholeheartedly and aspire to be a certified trainer so that I can share this wonderful knowledge with everyone. While there I had the honors of meeting Dr. Beck Bailey, who is literally my hero! ❤️

My goal is to have classrooms full of children and staff who feel safe and are empowered to make mindful decisions, have the skills to be emotionally regulated, and build safe meaningful connections. These skills will make adult lives easier, and the children will carry these skills with them through life, leading to the next generations have social-emotional skills that many adults are still learning.
